Why Welfare, Social Security, Minimum Wage?

This is a question I have trouble answering because of my youth and lack of clarity in the English language. So I leave it up to they whom are much wiser than I. I cannot say this more clearly than acclaimed conservative economist Milton Friedman. Here is the video I speak of:

http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=en&resnum=0&q=milton%20friedman&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wv#

These government programs which claim to work for the people are doing less for the Americans than what they can do for themselves. The same programs exist today and have only worsened since their inception. This video is old, but the man speaking was beyond his time. Big government is what liberals fight for everyday. It does nothing for Americans that they cant do for themselves.

I understand why welfare and minimum wage are very controversial; however, in my opinion, social security is necessary for the older generation who can no longer work.

I completely agree. but as friedman points out: the organizations which are said to be for the good of the people, actually work for the people who created them. As we see in the current social security crisis of our time when the money is used for other things rather then their intended target of the retired.

The reason social security is failing now is we just have too many older people. I think that social security needs to be kept intact, but reformed in some way.
